Running experiments

Having done all the preparatory work, you can now go to the heart of things and run the experiments.

First you need to run a pilot experiment. This will help you check your preparation, the running of the experiment and find out if there are any problems you did not foresee. You should run as many pilots as necessary until no more problems occur. To run a pilot test you need just few participants (2-3) to give you an overall realistic impression of the real experiment.


Some examples of problems you will discover: The venue is too noisy, it takes much longer than you calculated, The questionnaires are too long, participants need water, the room cannot be locked...

And now lets run the experiment!

    Here are some advices to run the experiments (applicable to both the pilot and real ones)
  • Present your participants with their experiment packs when applicable
  • Give a written explanation of your experiment alongside the instructions
  • Read the exact text to the participants in a neutral tone
  • Do not expand on explanations BEFORE the experiments, however tell the participants that after all the measurements are taken, they can ask any question they want about the experiment.
  • Perform the experiment exactly as you have described it in the experiment description
  • No comments, jokes, or anything of the sort during the experiments
  • Use your common sense to keep all neutral and controlled
  • If anything goes wrong, either restart the experiment if that is possible, or carry on but discard the resutls
