Experiment description

Before running an experiment, you need to write the experiment description! This is a document of detrimental value to the success or failure of your experiment.

Experiment Description:

    The description should include the following iterms (some may not be applicable to your particular case)
  1. Aims What project is this experiment part of
    To develop a new system X in the area Y
  2. Current Objectives Why are you running this experiment
    To compare system X with a conventional setting using system A
  3. Method Help others run the same experiment
    1. Participants and Profiles
      Criteria used to select your participants, i.e. age, gender, occupation...
    2. Test Description
      Test used : within subjects, between subjects comparison, analysis...
      What are the independent and the dependent variables...
      What statistical tools did you use: descriptive, analytical comparative...
      What tools did you use: MATLAB, SPSS...
    3. Measurements to be taken
      Time duration, task performance, subjective assessment...
    4. Procedure of the tests
      Detailed description of the tests. Think of a cooking recipe
    5. Tasks of the tests
      What do the participants have to do, again think of a cooking recipe
    6. Experiment settings
      Any preparation before the experiments, general description of the venue (e.g. office, laboratory...)
    7. System Description
      Detailed description of the system setting, components, arrangements, layout...
  4. Results What came out of the your experiment, including the unexpected
    1. Observed behaviour of the participants
      What did the participants do, how did they behave, anything interesting
    2. Objective measurements
      If you did objective measurements, list them here with explanation and analysis
    3. Subjective measurements
      If you did subjective measurements, list them here with explanation and analysis
  5. Discussion Overall look at the results
    What did the measurements show, any co-relation between the measurements
  6. Conclusion To conclude your experiment
    Are the aims still achievable, have the current objectives been reached
    1. Further work
      What couldn't you achieve this time and could be done with a little bit more work, also long term prospect
    2. Acknolwledgment
      List any help, assistance, guidance
